FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
KCAI Alumni Photography Show at the Cross Gallery
(February 2, 2007 - Kansas City, MO): The Cross Gallery, in conjunction
with the Office of Alumni Relations at the Kansas City Art Institute,
announces a new exhibit called
Continuum: KCAI Alumni Photography, new work by graduates from
1975 – 1979.
Over 50 photographic works from across the U.S. will be on exhibit. A
majority of the work pro-ceeds from the classic traditions of representational
photography that were taught at the Kansas City Art Institute in the 1970s.
Many participants have embraced the newer digital technologies or found
other approaches, while others continue to work with darkroom materials.
This will be the first time that so many graduates of the KCAI Photography
program will be showing together outside of the school.
Curator Jeff Burk (who graduated from KCAI in 1979, and is currently a
photography instructor at the College of DuPage) got the idea for the
show when, by coincidence, he saw new work by three other former KCAI
graduates in a short time span. “I recognized a familiar KCAI attitude,
but their themes had expanded and matured. I remember the camaraderie
of the photography students and thought it would be interesting to see
what everyone was doing now.” In the Fall of 2006, an open call
was put out to eighty graduates from 1975 to 1979. Twenty responded to
participate. The Cross Gallery agreed to put up the show to coincide with
KCAI’s Alumni Weekend, May 4 through 6.
Gary Sutton assisted Burk in deciding which work to show. Sutton taught
Photography at KCAI from 1975 to 2001 and is currently the Dean of Faculty.
Participants list: Chuck Avery, Jeff Burk, Ellen Carey, Diane Covert,
Michael Crane, Mark Estes, Karen Glaser, Frank Hamilton, Tom Jenkins,
Katherine Jones, Chuck Kelton, Robbin Loomas, Don McKenna, John Parker,

The dates of the exhibition are April 25 through May 26.
The opening reception will be held on Friday, May 4, from 6:30
to 9:30 pm. Gallery hours are Wednesday through Saturday, 11
am to 5 pm. The Cross Gallery is located in the Leedy-Voulkos Art Center
